Community Forestry
engaging in the improvement of local private & public forests

The forests of the Finger Lakes (and great Northeastern US) have endured and recovered from generations of abuse; the vast majority of forests were more or less clear cut in the early 1800s and again in the beginning of the 20th century. Today many forests remain young and challenged by disease, pests, and continuing human development. Most foresters only look at a woods if there is marketable timber stands, but so much of forested areas remain locked in early successional stages.
Work With Nature is focused on supporting the under appreciated and undervalued forests that currently blanket much of our local landscape. With increased fuel costs and development pressure, we have a choice; to again find ourselves decimating a precious resource in the early 2000s, or beginning to walk the path of stewardship, where the forests are encouraged to grow to their fullest potential, providing habitat, carbon sequestration, and soil protection. Surplus efforts of selective thinning operations can be utilized as fuel or building products.
This work involves a commitment on a community level. In addition to developing management plans and engaging in thinning operations, Work With Nature is committed to educating people of all ages on the benefits humans can have on forest ecosystems.
